5bDental implants are artificial root replacements made from titanium that are used when tooth loss occurs.  Usually teeth are lost because of decay, root canal failure, gum disease, trauma to the mouth, or excessive wear and tear. Although there are a number of restorative options for the treatment of missing teeth including fixed bridges and removable partial dentures, none have proven to be as functionally effective and durable as implants.  In some cases, implants are the only permanent solution to tooth loss.

There are many advantages of implant dentistry.  Besides being strong and durable, implants can be used to replace single teeth , support a dental bridge for the replacement of multiple teeth, and can be used with dentures to increase stability and reduce gum irritation.

The procedure of placing an implant is usually performed by an oral surgeon, periodontists, or certified general dentists.  Once it is determined there is adequate bone to support an dental implant, it is placed and allowed to osseointegrate, or fuse to the bone.  Osseointegration  usually takes about 3 to 6 months to anchor and heal, at which point the general dentist completes the procedure with the placement of a crown.  If there is not adequate bone to support the dental implant, a bone graft may be performed to augment to area in order to improve the stability of the implant.

Dental implants have one of the highest success rates in dentistry.  Studies have shown that a five-year success rate of 95% for the lower jaw and a 90% success rate for the upper jaw.  The lower jaw is more dense than the upper jaw and therefore osseointegration  is more successful.  Some factors that lower the success rate include smoking, diabetes, poor placement of the implant, poor oral hygiene by the patient.  Even though implants can never get cavities, loss of bone around the implant can occur if care is.
